Facts we know about our study group before arriving at London Business School: 1) we will work with them all year long for every assignment in every course, 2) it is comprised of six or seven people, 3) it is extremely diverse, by geography and background, and 4) there are equal prior success and horror stories from the study group experience. But until we arrive on campus, we don’t actually know who is in our study group.
 
Now I’m two weeks into the MBA experience. And I’ve known my study group for, well, two weeks. So yes, it is still too early to have made any conclusions about the study group experience. But I do know though that my group is indeed diverse. More importantly, we are ready to embrace and leverage each other’s backgrounds, worldviews, and work styles. And I also get the sense that we’re going to have a lot of fun doing it.
 
Take, for example, this conversation over dinner last Friday (thank you to my groupmate, Gabriel the Peruvian, and his wife Loretta for their gracious hosting!):
 
Gabriel the Peruvian: Loretta took me to her farm on our second date. Her family raises guinea pigs on the farm. You know, eating guinea pigs is very common in Peru. I think there is a great business opportunity – to sell guinea pigs in London.
Christine the Canadian: Seems like an untapped market. But we have to find a way to get over the stigma of guinea pigs as pets.
Tim the Brit: There is definitely an opportunity here. We just need to rename ‘guinea pig’. To something like…’wawa’. We could sell ‘wawa burritos’.
Eugenia the Russian: And we can serve them with a shot of vodka.
Prasoon the Indian: If we can find a way to sell the Peruvian national animal, the guinea pig, then we must also find a way to market the Indian national animal, the tiger. Tiger burritos for everyone.
Luca the Italian: Scusi, what the f@#k is a guinea pig?
 
Ok, so this conversation may have been fueled by some good wine and pisco, but our group will be laughing all the way to the bank when we cash in on our wawa burritos…or at least our diversity.
