Exchange at Kellogg

Posted by: Payton

I arrived in Chicago a few weeks ago and Kellogg has been a blast ever since.  Granted, it’s already snowed, hailed, rained and tornado’d, but everyone here seems to keep a pretty good attitude.

I had a little mishap with my class selection upon beginning, but I’m still pretty happy with the classes I’m taking – Market Strategy, VC/PE, Entrpreneurship & New Ventures and Values Based Leadership.  So far, the professors are great and class participation is really good.  However, I was hoping to get into some smaller classes than our 1st year core curriculum, but we still have about 60 students in each class.  Hopefully my classes back at LBS next term will be smaller.

Chicago is a great town, but it’s actually kind of nice being 30 minutes outside the city in Evanston.  You definitely get a collegial feel being together on a large college campus and almost every night you can run into someone at a local bar in town.  However, they could learn a thing or two from London about how to put a proper pub together!

A Googley Summer

It’s been awhile since my last post, but luckily there’s been a lot to talk about since then!  I’ve been working with Google at their headquarters in Mountain View, CA as an MBA summer intern.  Josh Eisen and I have been there representing London Business School as the first two students from our school to work at headquarters.  Hopefully we haven’t ruined it for everyone else;)

The summer has been great.  I was very fortunate to work on a strategic project that spanned Google’s two most profitable products, AdWords and AdSense.  I thought I knew all about them after preparing for my interviews and being somewhat tech savvy, but boy was I wrong!  Things were a lot more complicated on the inside.  Luckily, Google has the best and brightest engineers and business people in Silicon Valley working on their products.  It was truly and amazing place to be.

This week, I’m leaving for Venezula on an orientation trip before my exchange semester at Kellogg.  I’ll get to meet about 20 other Kellogg students.  We’re going to Los Roques national park and Margharita Island.  I’m planning on doing some bonefishing and diving.  It should be a nice break.  After that, we’re going to the Dominican Republic for a week… ah, the tough life of an MBA;)

MBAT – We are the champions!

We just returned from MBAT… victorious!  For those of you who don’t know what MBAT is, it’s an event hosted by the French business school HEC.  Basically, it is a mini olympics for all the European business schools to compete against each other.  And just like any good MBA student should do, it provides a great opportunity to network with fellow participants from other programs.

Overall, we had a great time – even if we wouldn’t have won.  I was very surprised by the level of comraderie, support and encouragement from ALL the schools.  Plus, it was great having the rest of the school there to cheer us on as each of us competed in our events – football, rugby, volleyball, squash, tennis, golf, chess, rowing, tug-of-war, ultimate frisbee, cricket, swimming, track & field and most importantly, basketball!  If you couldn’t guess, that’s my favorite sport and I’m happy to say we walked away with the gold this year.

Booz Allen Hamilton sponsored the event and made it possible for us to attend at a reduced price.  We were provided with a lot of gear – even our mascots came in full British regalia and a big red bus!  I can’t wait for next year!
