End of Round 1!

Posted by: Shiv Ramanna

Tomorrow marks the beginning of autumn term. We have now completed orientation and pre-term. Needless to say, it has been a roller-coaster ride. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience so far and I am extremely happy with my decision of choosing London Business School for my MBA.

The Orientation was a taster of what we could expect over the next two years – most importantly the quality of faculty and the thorough planning of the MBA programme office. The highlights of the orientation were an inspirational speech by Mohan Mohan and sessions by Dr. Richard Jolly on “10 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started My MBA” and Dr. Marcus Alexander on “An Introduction to Learning from Cases”. The most I enjoyed was “Away Day”, where we got to spend a full day with our study group working on team building activities.

September marked a series of events from Career Services including What/Who/How sessions on different job sectors and sessions on CV Writing and Networking. We had four short courses in the pre-term. Three things that impressed me the most were – 1) Use of case studies and its benefits in learning various management concepts. 2) Use of Simulations which not only creates real time business situations, but also enables us to work as a team in our study groups. 3) The course on GLAM – Global Leadership Assessment for Managers which brought together the results of 360 Assessment and Neo Self-Assessment, that we had taken before the course began. This was the first time I had done any such formal assessment and I could see the benefits. The personal coaching session, feedback from team members and different assignments complemented each other well with the course content.

Autumn term will be truly challenging. We have the Big 5 – Finance, Accounting, Strategy, Economics and Organizational Behavior along with a few short courses over a span of three months. Add to that, the various club activities which have picked up in the last couple of weeks. What lies ahead is a cold winter and a lot of sleepless nights. More later!

London Beckons!

Posted by: Shiv Ramanna

August 2002 was when I took my first international flight out of Bangalore to New York to pursue my graduate studies in Computer Science. Exactly eight years later, this August, I took my flight to London to pursue my MBA at London Business School.

Even though it has been only a couple of weeks since I arrived here, I have already started falling in love with the city: fantastic underground rail system, lovely parks, walker friendly roads, diversity of people around and of course most importantly, the impressive set of people that I have started to meet at London Business School.

Coming to London, I was anxious at leaving a promising career in the technology sector and a comfortable lifestyle in sunny California. Moving away from family wasn’t easy either, especially with a ten month old son. Albeit, the prospect of coming to a premier business school like London Business School was too exciting to give it a miss.

Though there are quite a few things that I am looking forward to over the next couple of years, I can summarize them in three main points: a) Develop a broad understanding of business and explore career opportunities beyond the narrow technology roles that I was limited to. b) Develop a solid social and professional network of friends c) Develop leadership and inter-personal skills through school activities and clubs

Over the next two years, I hope to share some of my key experiences through this blog.

For now, I can’t wait for the orientation program to start tomorrow! (PS: This blog post is pre-dated)
